PostSubject: English Pronouncing Dictionary Daniel Jones   Fri Feb 20, 2009 12:06 am

It happens to any teacher to be face to face with a difficulty in pronouncing a word. It may happen in class or in the staff room or during a meeting. It also happens that a colleague mispronounces a word and thinks he is right.
It happened to me to be confused on how '' vegetable'' is pronounced. Has it 3 or 4 syllables? Where does the stress fall with increase and object? I see that it is primordial to have some dictionaries, but which ones are the best?
I definitely recommend: The English Pronouncing Dictionary By Daniel Jones.
This dictionary is the key to your pronunciation torments.
It includes many parts:

Part 1: Introduction to the English Pronouncing Dictionary.
1.1 What is the English Pronouncing Dictionary? 1.2 Whose pronunciation is represented? 1.3 How are the pronunciations chosen? 1.4 Regional Accents
1.5 Pronunciation of foreign words 1.6 Usage notes 1.7 Syllable divisions
Part 2: Principles of transcription
2.1 The phoneme principle 2.2 Vowels and diphthongs
(a) British English (b) American English
2.3. Consonants 2.4 Non-English sounds 2.5 Stress 2.6 Syllable divisions
2.7 Assimilation 2.8 Treatment of /r/ 2.9 Use of /i/ and /u/
